核融合炉からも放射性廃棄物は出る。しかし、発電所の敷地内で管理することで放射能は短い時間で減衰し、廃棄物を減らすことができる。 ウランなどの核分裂反応では、核分裂でできる元素そのものに、高レベルや長寿命の放射性元素が含まれる。これは核分裂反応の宿命である。 これに対して核融合では、反応で直接発生するのはヘリウムと中性子のみである。この中性子は、できるだけリチウムに吸収させて燃料である三重水素を増殖するのに使う。だがこのとき、中性子がリチウムに吸収される前に周辺の材料に吸収されると、放射性元素になることがある。すなわち、「周辺の材料が何か」によって、発生する放射性元素の種類も、その量も変わる。それゆえ、核融合による放射性廃棄物を減らすため、工夫を凝らすことになる。 前回の記事「核融合を実現する材料のメドはもう立っている」で紹介した核融合用の材料である低放射化フェライト鋼は、放射性廃棄物を減ら
