Of useful idiots and true believersThe state press is practised at manipulating feelings, but it need not conjure them from thin air YEAR in, year out, the anniversary of the Mukden incident always arrives on September 18th. Anniversaries are like that, and yet the memory of September 18th, 1931 is subject to change within China, flaring up and settling down in an unpredictable pattern. It is the
Protesters splattered the Japanese Embassy in Beijing with eggs and paint over the weekend.Credit...Alexander F. Yuan/Associated Press BEIJING — Anti-Japanese demonstrators took to the streets again on Sunday in cities across China, with the government offering mixed signals on whether it would continue to tolerate the sometimes violent outbursts. The protests were orderly in Beijing, with several
BEIJING — China and Japan have agreed to start direct trading of their currencies, officials announced during a visit here on Monday by Japan’s prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda. Japan will also apply to buy Chinese bonds next year, allowing it to accumulate more renminbi in its foreign-exchange reserves. The moves were among several that emerged from Mr. Noda’s meetings with President Hu Jintao, whi
China is stepping up buying in Japanese government bonds, particularly notes with less than one year to maturity, market players say, in what looks like a fresh drive to diversify its ballooning foreign reserves after U.S. government bill yields fell.Foreign investors have flocked to Japanese government bonds in the past five weeks, finance ministry data shows and market sources say China was amon
