August 9 – 1971: The Soviet-Indian treaty signed. In mid-July, India is worried about Sino-US announcement of Nixon visit to Beijing & concerned about surging East Pakistan Crisis. It signs the treaty to forestall Soviet aid to Pak. & to send warning shot to PRC. #OTD
In response to FM Wang emphasizing PRC support to Pakistan’s Jammu & Kashmir claims, India implies it might not remain quiet on China’s “internal issues” much longer. Relations would really tank if New Delhi starts to raise Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang. Never say never!
